24 / BUILDING DIALOGUE / DECEMBER 2025 Trends Art Transforms Spaces into Places of Connection & Identity A s I wrap up my four-part guest series for Building Dialogue, I’m returning to one of the most meaningful aspects of landscape archi- tecture: the power of art to transform spaces into places of connection, iden- tity and cultural resonance. Art is not an afterthought, it’s a cata- lyst. When thoughtfully woven into the fabric of public spaces, art transforms how people experience their surroundings. It invites en- gagement, sparks reflection and fosters a genuine sense of belonging. Art has the power to move us beyond the expect- ed, beyond design that merely functions, toward places that breathe with meaning. When integrated with intention, it shapes environments that resonate with the spirit of a community, grounding us in something familiar yet inspir- ingly new. Through art, we create not just spaces, but sto- ries that are living expressions of culture, connection and identity. These are places that feel as though they’ve always belonged, where beauty and purpose coexist, and where people come together to feel seen, inspired and at home. At Design Workshop, we believe that collaborating with artists and local communities is essential to amplifying cul- tural narratives. These partnerships help ensure that the spaces we shape are functional, beautiful and deeply rooted in the stories and values of the people who use them. This can manifest in dif- ferent ways as shared in the following examples: n Urban Forest Initia- tive. In Denver, our firm supported the Down- town Denver Partner- ship’s Urban Forest Ini- tiative, part of the city’s Outdoor Downtown plan. This $5 million program funded by the city, local businesses and philanthropic partners aimed to plant new trees and improve growing conditions for existing ones. But this was more than a greening effort. In 2019, the Design Work- Becky Zimmermann CEO, Design Workshop The Design Workshop Foundation helped sponsor a temporary art in- stallation by Denver artist Kenzie Sitterud along Curtis Street to raise awareness about the city’s tree canopy and its role in creating a healthy, vibrant downtown.
